Since October 13, 2026, the section south of the Chickasaw Village Site (milepost 261.8) has been closed for construction of a new access road to the Chickasaw Heritage Center. Heavy equipment is working in the trail corridor and there is no way through, so hikers from either direction must turn around at the closure point. The 4 miles from the Parkway Visitor Center to Chickasaw Village are not part of the closure.

Blackland Prairie Section (Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail) Hiking Guide
This is the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail's home stretch in Tupelo, running through woods and prairie between the Parkway Visitor Center and Jackson Street. Construction has cut it short for now, so the walk to do is the northern 4 miles, ending at the site where a large Chickasaw village once stood. Entry costs nothing, and a dog on a short leash is welcome.
What's Open Right Now
The Park Service closed everything south of Chickasaw Village on October 13, 2026 while a new access road goes in for the Chickasaw Heritage Center, and it gave no end date. That takes out the last 2 miles to Jackson Street, along with the 1.5-mile hikers' loop the agency describes between Jackson Street and the village. Start from the north instead. One wrinkle: the Parkway's road-and-site status page still read "No Current Trail or Campground Closures" on November 3, while the scenic trail's own alert remains active. Believe the alert and the signs on the ground.
The Route North of the Closure
The trailhead sits on the access road across the Parkway from the visitor center at milepost 266. Agency mileages put Old Town Overlook 2 miles south and Chickasaw Village 4 miles south, so an out-and-back to the overlook is about 4 miles and to the village about 8. Follow white blazes and brown-and-white signs. Hiking Project maps the whole section at 6.5 miles one way with 276 feet of climbing and 268 of descent, averaging a 2% grade with a 15% maximum; the Park Service rounds it to 6. Nobody publishes a gain figure for the open piece alone, but it won't be more than that total.
Chickasaw Village Site
House sizes and shapes are marked on the ground here, with interpretive signs and an audio program featuring Chickasaw Nation speakers. The Park Service calls it a good spot for wildflowers and birds, set on a piece of Black Belt prairie. A 1,200-foot trail explains how the Chickasaw used local plants, and a walk around the prairie adds about 1.25 miles. The site has its own parking at milepost 261.8, which makes a shorter visit possible, though it is worth calling ahead while crews work nearby.
Parking, Fees and Dogs
There are no entrance fees anywhere on the Parkway. The visitor center is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily except Thanksgiving, December 25 and January 1, and it stocks maps of this section, so ask there where the barricades stand. Its 2,800-foot paved Beech Springs walk is a good add-on for kids. Six feet is the longest leash the Parkway allows, and you pick up after your dog. Tick repellent is the Park Service's specific advice for warm months. Coming up from Jackson, the Parkway itself is closed between mileposts 159.5 and 165 from November 2, 2026 until about mid-2027, with a seven-mile signed detour.
Best Season
The agency warns of summer highs into the upper 90s with heat indices over 100, and open prairie offers little shelter from that. Winter days run near 50, which is pleasant here, though nights can dip below freezing. Thunderstorms are common across the region, so watch the sky on the open stretches. Horse trails also pass through the Chickasaw Village site, so give riders room.
Hiking tips for Blackland Prairie Section (Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail)
- Start from the visitor center end; the southern trailhead at Jackson Street is beyond the closure.
- Turn around at the barricades near Chickasaw Village, which the agency says have no way around.
- Check the scenic trail's alerts rather than the Parkway road-status page, since the two disagree.
- Use tick repellent in warm months, for you and the dog.
- Listen to the Chickasaw Village audio program before you walk the site.
