Boundary Bridge Loop (Rock Creek Park) Hiking Guide

At the top of Rock Creek Park, Boundary Bridge crosses the creek where the District meets Maryland. Both of the park's main trails begin here, and a short loop links them: down the Valley Trail along the creek, across at Riley Spring Bridge, and back up the Western Ridge Trail. It is the quietest corner of the park and, in spring, its best wildflower walk.

Route and Distance

Hiking Project's North Rock Creek Park 5K Loop measures 3.2 miles with 258 feet of climbing and rates it easy to intermediate. From Boundary Bridge, follow the blue-blazed Valley Trail downstream to Beach Drive at Riley Spring Bridge, which the Park Service puts about 1.5 miles from the border. Cross, walk south along Beach Drive for about half a mile, then turn west on a singletrack to the Western Ridge Trail and follow its green blazes north across Wise Road to the start.

The Easy-to-Miss Turn

The footpath from Beach Drive over to the Western Ridge is the one tricky junction. The route's author says it is easy to overshoot; if that happens, take the next path heading west, which adds a little distance but reaches the same trail. With so few signs in the park, a downloaded map earns its keep here.

Parking

The lot at Boundary Bridge is small. Hiking Project mentions a little lot with trash cans plus some parking along the road, and the Park Service warns that the area can be very crowded. On a busy weekend, Picnic Grove #10 on Beach Drive has a bigger lot and restrooms (open seasonally), and the Valley Trail connects the two.

Spring Ephemerals

The Park Service singles out the floodplain near Boundary Bridge for spring wildflowers such as Virginia bluebell, mayapple and jack-in-the-pulpit. They bloom briefly, before the canopy fills in. Keep to the trail; trampled floodplain is how these patches disappear.

Dogs and Wise Road

The park's pet page names the Western Ridge Trail at Boundary Bridge as a good dog walk, as long as the dog stays leashed the entire time. Wise Road carries cars where the trail crosses it, so shorten the leash there. Like the rest of the park, this area closes at dark.

Hiking tips for Boundary Bridge Loop (Rock Creek Park)

  • Arrive early, or start from Picnic Grove #10 if the Boundary Bridge lot is full.
  • Watch for the westbound footpath off Beach Drive; it is easy to walk past.
  • Carry a map, because the park has few junction signs.
  • Pack out dog waste or use the trash cans at the lot.
