Browning Mill Pond Loop (Arcadia Management Area) Hiking Guide

Browning Mill Pond is the easy front door to Arcadia Management Area, Rhode Island's largest state management area at more than 14,000 acres. A flat loop of about 1.3 miles circles the pond, crosses two footbridges and passes a Civilian Conservation Corps pavilion. It now also leads to Young Boulder, a giant troll built from recycled wood by the artist Thomas Dambo. Arcadia is hunted, so from mid-September through February everyone on the trail, not only hunters, must wear fluorescent orange.

The Loop and the Troll

Hiking Project maps the Browning Mill Pond Loop at 1.3 miles with about 10 feet of elevation change. Its contributor calls the footing fairly moderate, with some rocks and roots, and says it rarely gets muddy even after a good rain. DEM's directions from the main lot are simple: keep the road on your right and the pond on your left, cross two footbridges, pass the historic CCC pavilion and keep going until you reach the troll. DEM says Thomas Dambo has built 125 trolls worldwide, 44 in the United States and five in Rhode Island. Young Boulder is Arcadia's, and DEM's page introduces him as the area's brand-new resident.

Fluorescent Orange: The Rule Here

Arcadia is a state management area, so DEM's orange rule applies to hikers, bikers and riders as well as hunters. From the second Saturday in September through the last day of February (September 12, 2026 to February 28, 2027), everyone must wear at least 200 square inches of solid fluorescent orange above the waist, visible from all directions; a blaze-orange hat meets that. During the shotgun deer season, December 5 to 31, 2026, the minimum rises to 500 square inches, which in practice means a hat and a vest. The 200-square-inch rule returns in spring, from the third Saturday in April through May 31. Fluorescent camouflage does not count.

Hunting Seasons Around You

In DEM's deer Zones 1 and 2, archery season runs September 15, 2026 to January 31, 2027. Muzzleloader season is November 7 to December 4, and shotgun season is December 5 to 31. The pond loop is a busy, short walk, but it sits inside a working hunting area, so the orange is not optional and the safest habit is to wear it on every fall visit. Management areas close from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise, except to people fishing, hunting or launching boats.

Dogs, Groups and Fees

DEM welcomes leashed dogs at Arcadia. Management-area rules allow leashes up to 25 feet, on roads and trails only, and between March 15 and August 15 no dog may run loose. DEM lists no entrance or parking fee. Groups of 10 or more need a special use permit from DEM's Management Area Stewardship Committee (401-539-2356) before the trip, which matters if you are organizing a bigger outing to see the troll. DEM asks visitors to carry out their trash.

Getting There and Making It Longer

From I-95, take Exit 5A to Route 102 south for 0.7 mile, then Route 3 south for 1.3 miles, then Route 165 (Ten Rod Road) west for 1.5 miles. Turn left at the big Arcadia sign. The Browning Mill Pond lot is about 1.7 miles down that road on the right, a tenth of a mile past a small shingled building. DEM lists the pond at 41° 33.37' N, 71° 41.155' W. Hiking Project's contributor lists ospreys, herons, ducks, geese and water lilies, and warns about mosquitoes in summer. If the pond loop leaves you wanting more, DEM says more than a dozen hiking trails cross Arcadia, and Breakheart Pond and the Mount Tom Trail are farther into the forest.
