Busse Woods Loop Hiking Guide
Busse Woods is the northwest suburbs' big green space: a 3,700-acre forest preserve around Busse Lake, a reservoir built to control flooding on Salt Creek. The main loop is paved, flat and more than seven miles long, which makes it a favourite for long walks, runners and families with strollers. It is not a wilderness hike — it is a reliable, accessible loop close to O'Hare with water views most of the way.
The Loop
The main paved loop is about 7.4 miles with only around 100 feet of gain, circling the 590-acre Busse Lake with spurs that bring the total trail mileage to around 10. It is easy terrain from start to finish, suitable for strollers and wheelchairs on most sections, with woodland and lake views. The distance is the only challenge.
Shared with Cyclists
The loop is heavily used by cyclists, runners and skaters as well as walkers. Keep right, walk no more than two abreast on busy days, and watch for bikes coming up behind you. Weekend mornings in summer are the busiest; weekday evenings are quieter.
Lake and Woods
Busse Lake was created as a flood-control reservoir for Salt Creek, and the surrounding preserve mixes woodland, wetland and open meadow. Spring migration brings waterbirds to the lake, and autumn colour along the wooded stretches is good. In winter the paved trail is a useful place to keep walking when dirt trails are muddy.
Where to Start
The loop can be joined from several parking areas; Ned Brown Forest Preserve in Elk Grove Village is a common starting point. Because it is a loop with many access points, it is easy to do part of it and cut back. Pick up a preserve map or check the Forest Preserves of Cook County site for lot locations.
Practicalities
There is no entry fee for Cook County forest preserves. Leashed dogs are generally allowed in the preserves; check posted signs at your trailhead. Carry water for the full loop in summer — shade is limited on the lakeside sections. Busse Woods is about 30 minutes northwest of downtown Chicago, just west of O'Hare.
