Cathedral Rock Hiking Guide
Cathedral Rock is the limestone prow standing over Kyle Canyon, and the trail up it is the most efficient summit in the Spring Mountains: three miles round trip, a thousand feet of climbing, and a top that drops away on three sides with Charleston Peak, Mummy Mountain and the whole canyon laid out below. At 8,597 feet it is also about thirty degrees cooler than the Las Vegas valley, which in July is not a minor detail.
The Climb
From the Cathedral Rock trailhead near the Mt. Charleston Lodge the trail climbs steadily through ponderosa, white fir and aspen on switchbacks, gaining most of its elevation in the first mile and a half. The tread is generally good with rocky sections, and the grade is honest but never desperate. What makes it feel harder than the numbers is the altitude — the trailhead is already above 7,500 feet, and hikers arriving from the valley an hour earlier feel every step.
The Summit Block
The final approach reaches a broad rock platform with genuine exposure on the canyon side. There is no scrambling required to stand on top, but the drop-offs are real and unfenced, and this is not a place to let children run. The view down Kyle Canyon is the reward, with the ski area, the lodge and the switchbacks you just climbed all visible below, and the high Spring Mountains ridgeline above.
Altitude, Weather and Season
Late spring through autumn is the season; snow makes the upper trail a microspike or crampon outing and the summit block dangerous when iced. Summer is the point — this is where Las Vegas goes when the valley hits 115. Afternoon thunderstorms build over the range through the monsoon and an exposed limestone summit is precisely the wrong place to be, so start early and be off the top by early afternoon in July and August.
Kyle Canyon After the Flood
Tropical Storm Hilary caused severe damage across this canyon in 2023 and recovery is ongoing, with several trails and facilities affected for years afterwards. Cathedral Rock has fared better than neighbouring Mary Jane Falls, but conditions in the canyon change and closures shift. Check the Spring Mountains conditions page before driving up rather than assuming what was open last season still is.
Practicalities
There are picnic areas and toilets near the trailhead and the Mt. Charleston Lodge is close by, which makes this an easy outing to build a day around. Leashed dogs are permitted and cope well with the forest trail, though the summit block's exposure warrants a short lead. There is no water on the route. Parking is limited and fills on summer weekends when the whole city is trying to escape the heat.

- Use this as the Las Vegas summer hike — the summit runs roughly thirty degrees cooler than the valley floor.
- Pace the first mile; the trailhead already sits above 7,500 feet and the altitude does more than the grade does.
- Keep a short lead on dogs and a firm hand with children at the summit block, where the drop-offs are real and unfenced.
- Be off the exposed summit by early afternoon in July and August, when monsoon storms build fast over the range.
