Chapel Loop (Pictured Rocks) Hiking Guide
This is the day hike most people mean when they talk about walking Pictured Rocks. The loop strings together Chapel Falls, Chapel Rock, two Lake Superior beaches and a long stretch along the top of the colored sandstone cliffs. It starts at a small lot at the end of a rough road, so the first decision is how early you can get there.
Permit: Pictured Rocks requires an entrance pass for every visitor 16 and older: $25 per private vehicle or $20 per motorcycle for 7 days, or $15 per person on foot or bike. The $45 park annual pass and America the Beautiful passes also work. No cash at park sites. A loop day hike needs no other permit; camping at Chapel Beach or Mosquito River needs a backcountry permit from Recreation.gov.
The Route
Hiking Project maps a 10.6-mile loop with 763 feet of climbing, the park says 10.5 miles including Mosquito Falls, and onX shows 10.23 miles and 693 feet. Either direction works. Going by way of Mosquito first, you cross the wooded Mosquito River basin to Mosquito Beach, then follow the North Country Trail along the cliffs for 4.4 miles to Chapel Beach by the park's mileage chart. Chapel Rock sits just across the creek. The last 3 miles run inland past Chapel Falls on an old roadbed. Hiking Project's contributor says the Mosquito Falls alternate adds about a mile compared with the river route.
Cliff Edges and Footing
The cliff section is the point of the hike and also its real hazard. The park warns about loose soil, tripping hazards and undercut rock, and says recent rock falls show these edges can be unstable, so stay on the tread and resist walking out for a better photo. Climbing Chapel Rock can bring a hefty fine. The Mosquito side is usually muddy and rough, and the Chapel side has also been wet and widened by people dodging mud. Expect wind and blowing sand at the overlooks.
Chapel Road and Parking
Turn north off County Road H-58 about 15 miles east of Munising and drive roughly 5 miles to the end of Chapel Road. The park calls it rough, with deep potholes, ruts and washouts, and says the lot often fills by 9 am in summer and early fall. From June 15 to September 15 the road and lot are closed to vehicles over 36 feet and combinations over 42 feet. The trailhead has a vault toilet, no drinking water and no cell service, so carry all your water from town or filter along the way.
Pass, Dogs and Camping
You need the park's entrance pass, and the pass sellers the park lists do not include this trailhead. Sort it out in Munising first; the fee machine at Munising Falls Visitor Center takes cards and runs outside staffed hours. Dogs are banned on every trail and beach in the Chapel and Mosquito area, even carried in. If you split the loop into an overnight, Chapel Beach and Mosquito River are reservable backcountry sites with no fires allowed at either. The permit costs $15 plus $5 per person per night.
Season and Bugs
Summer and early fall are the practical window. The park's biting-insect season runs from late May through September, and stable flies along the shore go after legs and ankles on hot days with a south wind; repellent won't stop them, so pack long, loose pants. Hunting is allowed in the park from Labor Day through April 1, so wear bright colors in fall. Chapel Road is unplowed and open only to snowmobiles from December 1 to March 31, and the park says to call a visitor center about road status in fall and spring.
