Crab Eyes Trail (Wichita Mountains) Hiking Guide
Crab Eyes is a rock formation in the Charon's Garden Wilderness, perched on top of boulders that look like a crab's raised eyes. The spur trail to it is a short, rewarding hike in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge: start on Charon's Garden Trail, turn off at the Crab Eyes sign and climb to the formation, which also draws climbers.
How Far and How Steep
Hiking Project measures the Crab Eyes spur at 1.3 miles from its junction with Charon's Garden Trail, climbing about 315 feet. The Outbound's out-and-back from the trailhead covers 3.65 miles with 479 feet of gain, which is the figure this page uses for the whole outing. Hiking Project rates the spur intermediate and says the end is a little more challenging, but no special equipment is needed.
Finding the Turn
Hiking Project starts the hike at the Charon's Garden trailhead, and its maps put the Crab Eyes junction near the northern, Sunset end of that trail, close to the Elk Mountain trailhead. After a short walk on Charon's Garden Trail, look for signs to Crab Eyes and follow the spur up into the rocks. It finishes on top of the boulders beneath the formation, and Hiking Project's contributor calls the view there well worth the trek. Side paths are common in this part of the refuge, so note where you left the main trail.
Climbers and Wilderness Rules
Crab Eyes draws climbers as well as hikers. Hiking Project notes that climbing needs no permit or fee here, though wilderness rules still apply. The refuge prohibits placing or removing bolts and anchors, asks climbers to keep groups small, and caps any group in Charon's Garden at 15 people. If you're just hiking, give roped parties room at the base.
Practical Details
Entry to the refuge is free. Dogs must stay on a leash shorter than 10 feet. There is no drinking water anywhere on the refuge, and the Fish and Wildlife Service warns that cell coverage is unreliable, so carry a paper map. Parking lots close at sunset. The refuge describes weekends as overwhelmingly busy at times and points visitors toward Monday through Thursday.
Best Months
The rock heats up fast in summer, when temperatures here have topped 100 degrees, so cooler months are better. Plan around the winter elk hunts too: on hunt days from December into early February the refuge has shut Charon's Garden and the trailheads around it, with closures changing for each hunt.
