Embudito Trail Hiking Guide

Embudito Trail starts at the end of a residential street in Albuquerque's Glenwood Hills and heads straight into the Sandia Mountain Wilderness. It follows Embudito Canyon up through rocky desert and into forest, eventually meeting the South Crest Trail more than 5 miles and about 3,000 feet above. Most people hike part of it; the full climb is one of the longest days you can start from inside the city.

The Trail

The Forest Service lists Embudito at 5.55 miles one way to the South Crest Trail, with about 3,040 feet of gain, for a full out-and-back of about 11 miles. Many hikers turn around partway, and shorter out-and-backs of around 8 miles are common on mapping apps. The first section is rocky and exposed, climbing out of the canyon mouth with wide views over the city.

The Canyon

The trail climbs through Embudito Canyon, passing from high-desert scrub to piñon and juniper and eventually into ponderosa pine and mixed conifer higher up. It connects to the Three Gun Spring Trail, which offers other options for loops or shorter outings. Embudito is hiking-only — no bikes or horses.

Heat and Water

The lower trail faces west and bakes in summer afternoons. There is no reliable water on the mountain, so carry everything you need. Summer monsoon storms, typically from July through September, can bring lightning to the upper trail by early afternoon. Spring, autumn and mild winter days are the best seasons for the lower section.

Getting There

From Montgomery Boulevard, head east to Glenwood Hills Drive and follow Trailhead Road to the large parking area. The Forest Service notes that cell coverage is not guaranteed on the trail. No fee is listed for this trailhead. Respect the surrounding neighbourhood and park only in the designated lot.

Practicalities

Keep dogs under control and on leash near other hikers and wildlife. Wear sturdy shoes for the rocky footing and bring layers, since the upper mountain is much colder than the trailhead. Tell someone your plan if you're going for the Crest — this is a long, remote day.

Hiking tips for Embudito Trail

  • Pick a turnaround point in advance — the full climb to the Crest is over 11 miles round trip.
  • Carry all your water; the Sandias have no reliable springs.
  • Start early in summer, when the west-facing lower trail bakes by midday.
  • Don't rely on cell service; share your plan before a long day.
  • Wear sturdy shoes for the rocky canyon floor near the trailhead.
