Empire Bluff Trail Hiking Guide

Empire Bluff is the short hike with the postcard view: a walk through beech-maple forest that ends on a boardwalk perched about 400 feet above Lake Michigan, looking out over Platte Bay, South Bar Lake and the shoreline north toward the Sleeping Bear plateau. It is short enough for families and most people finish it in under an hour. It is also one of the few trails in the park where leashed dogs are welcome all year.

Route to the Boardwalk

The Park Service lists the trail at 1.5 miles round trip; mapping apps record about 1.7 miles with roughly 180 feet of gain. It is an out-and-back from the trailhead on Wilco Road, just off M-22 south of Empire. A few short hills, some with stairs built in, are what earn the moderate rating. Numbered posts mark a self-guided tour, from a glacial erratic boulder near the start to an abandoned 1930s horse-drawn mowing machine in an old field.

What You See from the Top

About half a mile in, a bench marks the South Bar Lake overlook, with a first look north toward the Sleeping Bear Dune. The trail ends on a boardwalk that runs about 500 feet along the shoulder of the bluff. On a clear day the Park Service says you can pick out Point Betsie about 10 miles southwest, South Manitou Island to the northwest, and the southern edge of the dune plateau. The boardwalk exists to stop erosion: do not descend the bluff.

Sunset and Dark Skies

This is the park's classic sunset hike, and the overlook gets busy on clear summer evenings, so arrive well before sundown. Carry a headlamp for the walk back through the woods. Once the light fades, the dark sky over the lake makes the bluff a favourite spot for meteor showers. Benches line the trail and the top has several places to sit, so a picnic dinner is easy.

Trailhead and Pass

The trailhead has parking, a vault toilet, a few picnic tables and a QR code for downloading the trail map. A Sleeping Bear park pass is required to hike here. Buy it ahead of time on Recreation.gov or at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in the village of Empire; staffed fee locations are cashless. A vehicle pass costs $25 and covers seven days.

Dogs and Seasons

Leashed dogs are allowed on Empire Bluff all year, on a leash no longer than six feet. Spring brings trillium and other woodland wildflowers before the canopy fills in. Fall colour in the beech-maple forest is a highlight; as of late September 2026 the Park Service expected peak colour around mid-October. Deer rifle season runs November 15 to 30, when bright clothing is a good idea.

Hiking tips for Empire Bluff Trail

  • Sort out the park pass before you drive up, online or at the visitor center in Empire.
  • Get to the overlook well before sunset on clear summer evenings and bring a headlamp for the walk out.
  • Stay on the boardwalk; descending the bluff is dangerous and causes erosion.
  • Keep dogs on a six-foot leash; Empire Bluff is open to pets year-round.
  • Stop at the South Bar Lake bench about half a mile in for the first view north.
