Fall Creek Falls Gorge Overlook Trail Hiking Guide
Fall Creek Falls State Park is the big day trip from Nashville: a Cumberland Plateau park about two hours southeast, where creeks pour off the tableland into a deep sandstone gorge. The most popular hike links the Gorge Overlook and Woodland trails along the rim, crossing a suspension bridge and passing a series of viewpoints over Cane Creek Gorge before reaching the overlook for Fall Creek Falls itself.
The Route
The combined Gorge Overlook and Woodland route is about 3.3 miles with roughly 700 feet of gain on mapping apps. Tennessee State Parks lists the pieces separately: the Overlook Trail runs 0.65 miles from the Betty Dunn Nature Center, and the Woodland Trail 0.95 miles from the suspension bridge to the Fall Creek Falls overlook. Most of it follows the wooded rim, with three Cane Creek Gorge overlooks along the way.
The Base of the Falls
From the Fall Creek Falls overlook, the Base of Falls Trail drops about a third of a mile each way to the plunge pool. The park rates it very strenuous: steep, rocky, and a hard climb back out. Adding it turns a moderate rim walk into a genuinely demanding outing. Rocks near the base are slick with spray, and swimming in the plunge pool is dangerous.
Tornado Recovery
An August 2023 tornado damaged the park, and some trails remained closed in 2026, including the Piney Falls Trail, the Millikan's Overlook Trail and the long Lower Loop backpacking trail. The Woodland, Overlook and Base of Falls trails were listed as open. Check the park's trail status page before you go, since closures in the damaged areas change as crews work.
Planning the Day
At roughly two hours from Nashville, this is a full-day trip. The park itself is open around the clock, but the road to the falls is gated at dark and day-use areas close at sunset. The Betty Dunn Nature Center is the main trailhead. Autumn colour on the plateau is outstanding and brings the biggest crowds; winter offers the clearest views into the gorge.
Practicalities
There is no entry fee. Leashed dogs are allowed under Tennessee State Parks policy. The park has more than 56 miles of trail if you want to extend the day, plus a lodge. Bring water and snacks; cell signal is patchy in parts of the park.
