Jones Gap Trail to Jones Gap Falls Hiking Guide

The Jones Gap Trail follows the Middle Saluda River up a deep mountain cove, and the side trip to Jones Gap Falls is the park's easiest waterfall walk. It runs about a mile and a half each way on rocky, rooty tread with a steady climb, ending at a waterfall that AllTrails puts at about 50 feet. It is the hike to pick for a mixed group, or for the day you can't face the Rainbow Falls staircase.

Route and Distance

The full Jones Gap Trail (#1) is a National Recreation Trail that runs 5.3 miles one way, about three and a half hours, and the Mountain Bridge map rates it moderately difficult. Most people walk only the first part, to the falls. AllTrails measures that out-and-back at 3.0 miles with 413 feet of gain and estimates one to one and a half hours. Reviewers describe the blue-blazed path as a steady ascent beside the river that gets rocky and rooty at times.

Storm Damage Along the River

Hurricane Helene hit this valley hard. The park was closed for five months, and when it reopened on March 1, 2025, the Jones Gap Trail was open only as far as the falls. The vehicle bridge to the Visitor Center was destroyed, and a FEMA grant to repair or replace it was posted in early 2026; ask staff how to reach the office and restrooms when you arrive. The park now lists all official trails as open, but an AllTrails review describes landslides and displaced trail, especially from Jones Gap Falls up toward Silver Steps Falls.

Parking, Admission and Hours

Parking is tight, and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays a reservation guarantees you a space between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.; without one, wait for the gates to open to everyone at 1 p.m. Admission is not included in the parking reservation, so buy it online ahead of time unless you have a Park Passport. Weekdays are first-come, though the park warns that October and November are busy every day. Hours run from 9 a.m. to sunset, and the trails close an hour before dark.

Around the Trailhead

Near the start is the trout pond at the old Cleveland Fish Hatchery, the first state-owned hatchery in South Carolina, which now holds 60 to 80 brook, rainbow and brown trout for display. Wading in the Middle Saluda is allowed, swimming is not. Anglers need a South Carolina license and may use only artificial lures or flies. Dogs are welcome on a leash no more than six feet long.

Before You Go

Every hiker completes a registration card at the trailhead, and the park rates all of its trails as advanced terrain whatever their label. There is no phone signal in Jones Gap. The Jones Gap Trail continues past the falls all the way to US 276 near Caesars Head, but there are no shuttles between the two parks, so a through-hike needs two cars.

  • Look at the hatchery trout pond on the way out; it is steps from the trail.
  • Watch your footing on wet roots and rock beside the river.
