Little Baldy Trail (Wichita Mountains) Hiking Guide
Little Baldy is a small granite knob above Quanah Parker Lake in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. The refuge sends people up it from Quanah Parker Dam as a quick way to gain some elevation, and the final scramble earns a view across the lake to the surrounding peaks. It's a good sampler before the bigger climbs on the west side of the refuge.
Distance and Climb
The refuge lists the Little Baldy Trail at 0.8 miles and rates it Moderate, with a surface of gravel, rock and dirt; its trail-length table puts it at 0.85 miles. Hiking Project maps 0.7 miles with about 73 feet up and 87 feet down, which comes to roughly 1.4 miles and 160 feet of climbing as an out-and-back. Hiking Project also maps a flat 0.3-mile Little Baldy Alternate Trail.
Scrambling to the Top
The refuge's description is simple: start at Quanah Parker Dam and scramble to the top for a view of Quanah Parker Lake and the peaks around it. Expect to use your hands on the final scramble, and pick a line you'll be comfortable descending. Rock climbing is allowed on the refuge in daylight, but if you aren't roped up, stay on the walking route. Caves and crevices are off limits to protect bats from white-nose syndrome.
Linking the Lake Trails
The 0.4-mile Quanah Parker Lake Trail crosses the lake on a bridge and links Doris Campground with the Environmental Education Center, and the 0.1-mile accessible Environmental Education Center Trail loops the grounds. The education center has restrooms. The refuge asks visitors who aren't camping to stay out of Doris Campground, so park at the education center or dam rather than cutting through campsites.
Rules and Seasons
There's no entry fee. Dogs must stay on a leash under 10 feet; the scramble may be too much for some. Parking areas close at sunset, the refuge has no drinking water and cell coverage is spotty. Quanah Parker Lake was among the areas closed during a December 2025 elk hunt, and the refuge closes different areas for each hunt from December into early February, so check before a winter visit. In summer, aim for early morning.
