Mary's Rock Hiking Guide

Mary's Rock is the first big view most people reach in Shenandoah's Central District. Just inside the Thornton Gap entrance, the Appalachian Trail climbs south from the Panorama parking area to a jumble of rock outcrops with a sweeping view west over the Shenandoah Valley and Massanutten Mountain. It is a solid climb of about 1,200 feet — enough to feel earned — and dogs are welcome.

The Hike

The Park Service lists the Mary's Rock summit hike at 3.7 miles round trip with about 1,210 feet of gain, rated moderate and taking around three and a half hours. From the Panorama parking area at Skyline Drive milepost 31.5, the route follows the Appalachian Trail steadily uphill through forest, then a short spur leads onto the summit rocks. The return is the same way.

Shorter Option

For less climbing, start instead at the Meadow Spring parking area at milepost 33.5. The Park Service lists that approach at 2.9 miles round trip with about 830 feet of gain. It reaches the same summit and is a good choice for families or anyone short on time.

The Summit

The summit is a cluster of rocky outcrops rather than a single viewpoint, so take your time finding a spot. The main view is west over the valley and the long ridge of Massanutten Mountain. The Park Service maintains very limited closures on parts of the outcrops to protect rare rock-outcrop plant communities; respect any signed areas.

Thornton Gap Crowds

Thornton Gap is one of the park's busiest entrances in autumn, with some of the longest waits, according to the Park Service. On October weekends, arrive early or come on a weekday. The Panorama parking area is large and has restrooms and water, and it is open year-round, making Mary's Rock one of the better winter hikes when Skyline Drive is open.

Practicalities

Leashed dogs are allowed on a leash of six feet or less. Entry is covered by Shenandoah's $30 vehicle fee, valid seven days, or a $55 annual pass; the stations are cashless. Bring layers — the summit is exposed and usually cooler than the valley. Black bears are active in the park, especially in spring and autumn.
