Mount Sentinel M Trail Hiking Guide

The M on Mount Sentinel is Missoula's front porch. From the east edge of the University of Montana campus, a trail that dates to 1908 switchbacks up the grassy face of the mountain to the big concrete M, with the whole Missoula valley opening up below. It is one of the city's most-hiked trails, crowded with students, runners and dogs, and a remarkably quick route to a view over the whole city.

The Climb

Visit Montana lists the trail at three-quarters of a mile one way with about 620 feet of gain; mapping apps put the round trip at about 1.7 miles and 643 feet. The trail zigzags up the open slope in a series of switchbacks. It is steep but steady, and there is no shade, so it is warm on summer afternoons and slippery with ice in winter.

The M and Beyond

The concrete M, about 125 by 100 feet, was built in 1968. From it, you look over campus, downtown and the Clark Fork River. Stronger hikers continue about another mile to the summit of Mount Sentinel at about 5,158 feet, for even wider views over the valley.

Open Year-Round

Unlike nearby Mount Jumbo, Mount Sentinel has no winter wildlife closure. The City of Missoula even lists it as a place to hike while Jumbo is closed. In winter, the switchbacks are often icy; traction devices make a big difference. Spring brings green grass and wildflowers to the slopes.

Dogs

Mount Sentinel includes City of Missoula conservation land. Dogs must be leashed in parking areas and within 200 yards of trailheads; beyond that they may be under voice control within 75 feet of their owner. Owners must pick up waste. On the busy lower switchbacks, keep dogs close.

Practicalities

The trailhead is at the east edge of the University of Montana campus. Parking on campus may be restricted on weekdays, so check posted signs or walk or bike in. There is no fee. Bring water in summer, and expect lots of company — this is Missoula's busiest trail.
