Pinnacle Mountain Trail (Table Rock State Park, SC) Hiking Guide

Pinnacle Mountain is the quieter big climb at Table Rock State Park. The yellow-blazed trail climbs 4.2 miles from the Nature Center past creek crossings, a spur to Mill Creek Falls and the open Bald Knob outcrop to the wooded summit, the tallest mountain that sits entirely inside South Carolina. The view is at Bald Knob, not the top, and the park manager names this as his favorite hike in late autumn and early winter.

Permit: Per-person admission at Table Rock State Park: adults $6, SC seniors (65+) $3.75, kids 6-15 $3.50, age 5 and under free. Hikers complete a registration card (one per group). Leaving a car overnight for the Foothills Trail requires a parking permit bought at the Visitor Center during business hours.

Route and Mileage

The park lists the Pinnacle Mountain Trail at 4.2 miles one way and rates it very strenuous. AllTrails measures the out-and-back at 8.5 miles with 2,329 feet of gain and puts it at five to five and a half hours. The first stretch shares its route with the Foothills Trail, which uses white blazes alongside the yellow ones; at about mile 4 the Foothills Trail branches sharply left and the summit path goes straight up a steep final pitch.

Mill Creek Falls and Bald Knob

Past a small waterfall and a giant rock ledge, a 0.4-mile spur leads to a wooden bridge facing Mill Creek Falls; the park's FAQ puts the falls 2.9 miles up the trail. Back on the main route, a steep climb levels out and reaches the huge sloping outcrop the park calls Bald Knob (the FAQ calls it Bald Rock, 3.6 miles up). From there you look across at Table Rock and out to Greenville on a clear day. The summit itself is in the trees and marked by a sign and a rock pile.

Making a Loop

Instead of retracing your steps, you can descend on the orange-blazed Ridge Trail, a 1.9-mile connector the park rates moderate to strenuous, which drops to the Table Rock Trail for the walk back to the Nature Center. The park notes that reaching Pinnacle's summit is 0.2 mile shorter if you go up Table Rock Trail and across the Ridge Trail, though that way has many more staircases. The blue-blazed Mill Creek Pass Trail, 0.6 mile, cuts between the two for a shorter variation.

Getting Started This Season

All of the park's main climbs begin at the Nature Center, and a deck and Carrick Creek Falls project there has closed the building and its restrooms since late July 2026 with no end date posted. Park, follow the arrows to the Concessions Area to sign the hiker register and use the restrooms, then take the temporary access path. Admission is charged per person, not per car. Dogs can come along, but the park requires a six-foot-maximum leash on every trail.

Foothills Trail Hikers

This trail is the eastern access to the 76-mile Foothills Trail. Camping is not allowed anywhere on the park's trail system; the FAQ says camping on the Foothills Trail is allowed once you leave the park boundary 4.1 miles up. Cars left overnight need the park's parking permit. AllTrails reviewers report erosion and mud after rain and an overgrown, hard-to-follow descent off the peak at times, so carry a map if you plan to take the Ridge Trail down.
