Prairie Center Main Trail Hiking Guide

Prairie Center is a Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks property west of Lake Olathe that is being restored to native tallgrass prairie. The main loop wanders through head-high grass, a strip of creek woods and past a pond, and it is open to people on foot only. It shows what this part of Johnson County looked like before the subdivisions.

The Loop

Hiking Project maps the main loop at 2.7 miles with about 172 feet of climbing; KC Hiker describes the main gravel loop as about 2 miles, with mowed side trails that make it longer. From the main lot by the area office, head south out of the parking area and turn west on the main trail. The northeast side is easy grass path. The western half switches to dirt through the woods with several creek crossings and a couple of short, steep climbs. A one-lane gravel drive runs through the site too, and side loops branch off often, so watch each junction.

Getting There

The address is 26325 W. 135th Street, Olathe. Kansas Wildlife and Parks puts trail access near the farm buildings or at the North Trailhead on West 135th Street, with vault toilets at the trailheads. Trails are open only during daylight hours and can close temporarily for maintenance or to let a muddy surface recover.

Rules and Dogs

Kansas Wildlife and Parks keeps the trails for foot traffic only, with no bicycles, horses or motorized vehicles. Dogs are welcome on a leash if you clean up after them; some third-party listings still say pets are banned, but the department's own rules allow them. Fishing needs a Kansas license, and camping, swimming, ground fires and hunting are all prohibited. Access to the trails is free, and unlike a Kansas state park there is no vehicle permit. The department asks hikers to stay off the paths when they are muddy.

What You Will See

Kansas Wildlife and Parks describes a 295-acre day-use property with six miles of natural-surface and gravel trails, prairie and woodland habitat, and the vintage farm buildings of Hillcrest Farm, built between the 1920s and 1950s. The grass is the show here. The pond in the middle has a deck that works for a picnic, and a few more picnic spots are tucked around the property. Hiking Project lists birding and wildlife among its features, and there is little shade in the open sections.

  • Wear sun protection; the prairie sections are fully exposed.
  • Do a tick check afterward; the paths run through tall grass.
  • Keep dogs leashed and leave bikes at home; the trails are foot traffic only.
