Rainbow Falls Trail (Jones Gap) Hiking Guide

Rainbow Falls is the harder of the two waterfall hikes at Jones Gap State Park and, for many Upstate hikers, the better one. After an easy start along the Middle Saluda River, the trail turns uphill and climbs hard on rock and earthen steps to the base of a tall waterfall pouring over a granite cliff. Weekend parking is limited and reserved, so the planning starts days before the hike.

Permit: Jones Gap State Park admission is per person ($6 adults, $3.75 SC seniors 65+, $3.50 ages 6-15, free 5 and under). On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays a parking reservation is required for guaranteed entry from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; it covers one vehicle and does not include admission, which must be bought online in advance unless you hold a Park Passport. Hikers fill out a registration card at the trailhead.

Distance and the Climb

The park manager describes the hike as a 2.2-mile, 1,200-foot climb to the bottom of the falls, and the park's trail list also gives 2.2 miles one way. On the Mountain Bridge map, the Rainbow Falls Trail itself (#4) is 1.6 miles and rated very strenuous, because you first walk a stretch of the Jones Gap Trail to reach it. AllTrails measures the round trip at 4.7 miles with 1,181 feet of gain and rates it hard. Its reviewers sum it up as a fairly level, rocky first mile followed by about 850 feet of climbing in the next.

The Falls

The manager calls Rainbow Falls a 120-foot waterwall over a massive granite cliff; other guides round it to about 100 feet. Either way, you arrive at the bottom, and the rock around the plunge pool is wet and slick. Give yourself time at the base; this is the turnaround, and the only way back is the same staircase you climbed.

Weekend Parking Reservations

Jones Gap's lot is small. On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, you need a parking reservation for guaranteed entry between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., booked through reserve.southcarolinaparks.com. The reservation does not cover admission: you also buy admission online beforehand (or show a Park Passport) and present both at the gate. Gates stay locked to drivers without reservations until 1 p.m., and then open first-come, first-served. Weekdays are always first-come. The park expects heavy crowds all week in October and November, and roadside parking is not allowed.

Registration, Hours and No Signal

The park opens at 9 a.m. and trails close one hour before sunset every day. Every hiker fills out a registration card at the trailhead, and the park treats all of its trails, whatever the rating, as advanced. There is no cell service anywhere in Jones Gap, so download a map and set a meeting plan before you leave Greenville. Leashed dogs are allowed, on six feet of leash or less, but the stone steps near the falls are steep for small dogs.

Helene Recovery

Hurricane Helene closed Jones Gap for five months. When it reopened on March 1, 2025, Rainbow Falls Trail was one of only two routes open, and the park says all official Mountain Bridge trails are now open again. Expect fresh scars along the river: downed trees, rerouted tread and rearranged boulders. Recent AllTrails reviewers also mention yellow jackets in late summer and muddy patches after rain.

Hiking tips for Rainbow Falls Trail (Jones Gap)

  • Book weekend parking and buy admission online before you go; you need both at the gate.
  • Wear shoes with good grip for the rock steps and the wet slab at the base.
  • Bring trekking poles; the descent is harder on knees than the climb.
  • Agree on a turnaround time before you start, since phones won't work in the park.
  • Fill out the registration card at the trailhead kiosk.
