Raven Cliff Falls Trail (Caesars Head) Hiking Guide

Raven Cliff Falls drops about 420 feet off the Blue Ridge Escarpment, and the red-blazed trail at Caesars Head State Park ends at an overlook facing it across the gorge of Matthews Creek. The park calls it one of its most popular trails, and the fee, the small lot and the fall crowds all shape how you plan the day.

Permit: Caesars Head State Park charges a trail access fee per person: $3 adults, $1.50 SC seniors, $1 children 6-15, free for 5 and under. There are no day-use parking reservations at Caesars Head; parking is first-come, first-served, and roadside parking is not allowed. Hiker registration is mandatory in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness.

Distance: Three Sources, Three Numbers

The park's figures don't quite agree with each other. The Mountain Bridge trail map lists Raven Cliff Falls Trail #11 at 2.2 miles one way, about 1.5 hours, and the park FAQ calls it a 4.4-mile round trip taking two to three hours, while the park's main page rounds it to four miles. AllTrails measures 3.9 miles out and back with 646 feet of gain and rates it moderate. Plan on roughly four miles and two to three hours with a stop at the overlook.

Parking on US 276

The trailhead is not at the visitor center. SC Trails directs you north on US 276 about 1.1 miles past the Caesars Head visitor center to the Raven Cliff Falls parking area on the right; the trail starts across the highway, marked with red blazes. The lot is small. On October and November weekends the park says it often hits capacity, and it does not allow highway parking or walk-ins, so arrive early or come on a weekday. Watch traffic when crossing 276.

Fee, Registration and Hours

Caesars Head charges a trail access fee per person ($3 for an adult, less for South Carolina seniors and kids 6 to 15). The park takes no day-use parking reservations. Registering before you hike is mandatory across the Mountain Bridge trails, and every trail in the park is rated advanced and runs through a wilderness setting. Trails close one hour before sunset all year, so a late start on a short winter day does not leave much margin.

The Suspension Bridge Option

For a closer look, the park describes a longer route to a suspension bridge that crosses Matthews Creek above the falls: 6.6 miles round trip on its main page, or seven miles and four to five hours in its FAQ. The park manager calls the bridge his favorite spot in the park. AllTrails also maps an 8-mile loop with the Dismal Trail and about 2,000 feet of gain, rated hard, which reviewers say includes ladders and steep rock faces that are hard on dogs.

After Helene, and What to Bring

Hurricane Helene closed much of the Mountain Bridge trail network in 2024, and an April 2025 map still showed only some trails open. The park advisory now says all official trails in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness are open. Leashed dogs are allowed on the trail; the park's limit is six feet, and it will ask owners to remove pets that harass wildlife. Black bears live here. AllTrails reviewers warn that fog can hide the falls entirely, so check the forecast if the view is the point.
