Rose River Falls Hiking Guide

Rose River Falls is the waterfall hike Shenandoah regulars choose when Dark Hollow Falls is packed. The four-mile loop from Fishers Gap drops through the Shenandoah Wilderness to a 67-foot waterfall, then follows the Rose River and Hogcamp Branch past a string of cascades and pools before climbing back to Skyline Drive. It is longer and quieter — and, unlike its neighbour, open to dogs.

The Loop

The Park Service lists the Rose River Falls circuit at 4.0 miles with about 910 feet of gain, rated moderate and taking around four and a half hours at a relaxed pace. From the Fishers Gap parking area at milepost 49.4, the route follows the Skyland–Big Meadows Horse Trail and then the Rose River Loop Trail down to the falls, before climbing back via a fire road. Most of the loop is in designated wilderness.

Upside Down

Like many Shenandoah hikes that start on Skyline Drive, Rose River is downhill first. The steepest and rockiest climbing comes on the way back up, past cascades along Hogcamp Branch. Pace yourself on the descent and save water and energy for the return. The rocks near the water are slick; take care at crossings.

Dogs Welcome

Leashed dogs are allowed on the Rose River Loop, making it one of the park's best waterfall hikes for dog owners; the Park Service points people to it for exactly that reason. There is one exception: a short, 0.25-mile spur connects to Dark Hollow Falls, where pets are banned, so don't take your dog down it.

Seasons

Spring brings the biggest flow and wildflowers along the river. Summer is cool under the forest canopy, though water levels drop. Autumn colour is excellent, and the park is at its busiest from late September into November. The mountain is usually about 10°F cooler than the valley, so bring a layer.

Practicalities

Shenandoah charges $30 per vehicle for seven days of entry, or $55 for its annual pass, with cashless entrance stations. Keep dogs on a leash of six feet or less. Black bears are common in this part of the park — store food securely and never approach them. Big Meadows, a short drive south, has food, restrooms and a lodge.

Hiking tips for Rose River Falls

  • Save energy for the climb out — the loop descends first and finishes uphill.
  • Keep your dog off the short spur to Dark Hollow Falls, where pets are banned.
  • Come in spring for peak flow and wildflowers along the river.
  • Use this loop as a quieter alternative when Dark Hollow Falls is crowded.
  • Keep dogs on a six-foot leash, as the Park Service requires.
