Southwind Nature Trail (Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve) Hiking Guide

The Southwind Nature Trail is the short, dog-friendly way to see Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. It loops over the hills just north of the historic ranch house, crosses a spring-fed stream and climbs to the Lower Fox Creek School, a one-room schoolhouse on a hilltop. Hiking Project calls it the preserve's most popular trail.

The Loop

The National Park Service lists the Southwind Nature Trail at 1.75 miles. Hiking Project maps it as a 1.3-mile segment with about 119 feet of climbing, from the Lower Fox Creek School lot to the visitor center area. The trail crosses hill and valley, a watercourse and prairie grassland, with two overlooks along the way. Look for gray and white limestone and the hard flint that gave the Flint Hills their name. From the visitor center, walk up the gravel road past the ranch house to two connecting trails; or park at the schoolhouse lot and start there.

The Schoolhouse and Ranch

The Lower Fox Creek School is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from May 1 through December 31; it stays closed in heavy rain or snow, though you can always look through the windows. Back at the start, the 1880s ranch headquarters includes a three-level limestone barn from 1882, and the limestone mansion is the only ranch building with temperature control. Self-guided and cell-phone tours cover the buildings.

Dogs and Rules

This is one of the preserve's trails where pets are welcome year-round, on a 6-foot leash, along with the Fox Creek Trail, the Z Bar Spur and the Bottomland Nature Trail. Waste bags are at the kiosk where the Southwind trail starts by the ranch house. The nature trails are foot traffic only, with no bikes, horses or drones, and they are open 24 hours. There is no entrance fee.

Seasons and Hazards

The Park Service named the trail for the Kansa people, the People of the Southwind. The grass grows tallest in fall. Watch for snakes, poison ivy, ticks and chiggers in the warm months, and stay on the path. Prescribed fire season is late February to April, with fall burns possible in October and November; staff close nearby trails before each one.
