Starved Rock Wildcat Canyon Loop Hiking Guide

Starved Rock is the reason Chicago has a hiking scene at all: a stretch of sandstone bluffs and canyons on the Illinois River, 90 minutes from the Loop, with waterfalls that pour after spring rain. This loop from the Visitor Center hits the park's greatest hits — the summit of Starved Rock itself, the Lovers Leap and Eagle Cliff overlooks, and Wildcat and French canyons — all of which stayed open during the park's 2026 trail project.

The Loop

Mapping apps list the Starved Rock, Wildcat Canyon and French Canyon loop at about 5.2 miles with roughly 530 feet of gain, most of it on the many staircases and boardwalks that link the bluff tops with the canyon floors. Starved Rock itself is a short climb from the Visitor Center with views over the river and the Starved Rock Lock and Dam. Wildcat Canyon's waterfall is one of the park's showpieces when it is running.

Trail Project Detours

Starved Rock's multi-year trail, bridge and stair project has closed several routes, and one of them — the red river trail over French Canyon Creek and Cove — sits close to this loop. The destinations on this hike are open, but the standard line may need a detour. Check the Illinois DNR's Starved Rock trail-improvement closures page and ask at the Visitor Center before you set off, and follow posted detour signs.

Parking on Weekends

On busy weekends the main Visitor Center lot fills and is closed to new arrivals, typically by 10 or 11 a.m., reopening in mid-afternoon. An overflow gravel lot off Route 71 south of the Lodge holds several hundred cars. Groups of 20 or more need advance permission from the park superintendent, requested at least 21 days ahead.

Waterfalls and Seasons

The canyon waterfalls are rain-fed and at their best in spring and after heavy storms; the DNR notes they typically dry out by the end of June. Autumn colour on the bluffs is excellent and brings the biggest crowds. In winter, some falls freeze, the crowds thin out, and the stairs and boardwalks become icy — traction is essential.

Safety and Practicalities

Stay on marked trails. The sandstone bluffs are crumbly and steep, and people have died after leaving the trail or climbing past barriers. Illinois charges no entrance fee at state parks. Trails are open 7 a.m. to sunset. Leashed dogs are allowed; the DNR asks that they not drink from the canyon streams or river.
