Storm Castle Peak Hiking Guide

Storm Castle is a rocky peak above Gallatin Canyon, and the trail to its top is one of the best short climbs near Bozeman. In under two and a half miles, it switchbacks nearly 1,900 feet up a steep, sunny slope to a rocky summit at about 7,280 feet, with views down into the canyon and across the surrounding mountains. It is short, steep and satisfying.

The Climb

Mapping apps and local guides agree on about 4.8 miles round trip with roughly 1,850 feet of gain on Storm Castle Mountain Trail #92; one local guide gives a higher 2,300 feet. The trail switchbacks relentlessly up a south-facing slope, then scrambles over rock near the top. Loose rock and steep grades make the descent slow, and it is not advised when the trail is slick.

Getting There

Turn off US-191 in Gallatin Canyon onto Storm Castle Road, cross the Gallatin River and drive about two miles to the trailhead — roughly 16 miles south of Four Corners. In winter, Storm Castle Road is gated below the trailhead until mid-spring, so you park at the gate and walk the extra road distance.

Ticks and Heat

Ticks are notorious on Storm Castle in spring, so wear long pants, use repellent and check yourself and your dog afterwards. In summer the exposed, south-facing slope gets very hot; start early. Snow and ice can linger in shady spots in spring, and autumn is often the most pleasant time to go.

Dogs

Dogs are allowed. Explore Big Sky warns that dogs can kick rocks down onto hikers below on the steep switchbacks, so keep yours close and under control, especially near the summit scramble.

Practicalities

There is no fee. Carry plenty of water — there is none on the trail. Wear shoes with good grip for the loose rock, and consider poles for the descent. This is bear country, as is all of the Gallatin; carry bear spray.
