Table Rock Trail (Table Rock State Park, SC) Hiking Guide
Table Rock is the granite dome you see from Highway 11, and the red-blazed Table Rock Trail is the only route in the park that goes to the top. South Carolina State Parks rates it very strenuous: 3.6 miles one way and about 2,000 feet of climbing through boulder-strewn oak and hickory forest to a 3,124-foot summit. It is the signature hike of the Upstate and one of the busiest, so start early and plan on most of a day.
Permit: Table Rock State Park charges admission per person: $6 adults, $3.75 South Carolina seniors 65 and older, $3.50 children 6-15, free for ages 5 and under. No day-hike permit or parking reservation is needed (the park's day-use reservations are for picnic shelters), but every group fills out a hiker registration card before starting.
Distance, Time and Climb
The park lists the trail at 3.6 miles one way, a National Recreation Trail that gains roughly 2,000 feet from the Nature Center. AllTrails measures the round trip at 7.0 miles with 2,345 feet of gain and rates it hard. The park's own estimate for an average hiker is five hours: about three going up and two coming down. Expect steep grades, rock stairs and boulders most of the way; there is little flat walking after the first half mile.
Where the Views Are
The park's FAQ maps the overlooks by distance up the trail. The Halfway Shelter at 1.5 miles faces south and southwest. Governors' Rock at 2.6 miles looks west. The open Table Rock Face at 3.5 miles takes in the southeast through southwest, and the Watershed Overlook at the end of the trail, 3.6 miles up, faces north and east. If the group is splitting up, Governors' Rock makes a good turnaround for anyone who wants a shorter day with a real view.
Trailhead Detour During Construction
Since July 27, 2026, the park has been building a new Nature Center deck and improving access to Carrick Creek Falls. The Nature Center and the trailhead restrooms are closed until that project wraps up, and no end date is posted. Follow the arrows through the parking lots to the Concessions Area, where you register, find restrooms and pick up a temporary path to the trail. Check the park advisory on southcarolinaparks.com before you drive up.
Admission, Hours and Rules
Admission is per person ($6 for adults, with lower rates for South Carolina seniors and children 6 to 15), paid on arrival. The park opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 7 p.m. Sunday through Thursday in standard time, later on Fridays, Saturdays and during Daylight Saving Time; the gates lock each night. Hikers must be off the trails before sunset, and camping anywhere on the park's trail system is prohibited. Dogs are welcome on this trail but have to stay on a leash of six feet or shorter the entire time.
Fire and Storm History
The March 2025 Table Rock Fire burned about 13,845 acres before it was contained on April 8, and the park's trails reopened in stages that spring. Hurricane Helene had already brought down trees across the Upstate the previous fall. Expect to see fire scars along the way. Black bears live in the park, so keep food packed away at the overlooks.
