Volcanoes Trail Hiking Guide

On Albuquerque's West Mesa, a line of small volcanoes looks back across the city at the Sandias. They erupted long ago and left black basalt flows that later became the canvas for Petroglyph National Monument's rock art. The Volcanoes Trail loops around three of the cones on easy, open paths, with some of the widest views in the city — and a request from the Pueblos that you enjoy them from the trail, not the summits.

The Loop

The combined loop around the cones is about 3 miles with roughly 320 feet of gain on mapping apps. The Park Service describes it in segments: a 1-mile round trip to an overlook, a 0.8-mile loop around Black Volcano, a 2-mile Vulcan loop and a 2.3-mile North loop. Mix and match them for a shorter or longer walk. The paths are sandy and gravelly with gentle grades.

Please Don't Climb the Cones

In Pueblo cultural beliefs, climbing the volcanic cones desecrates a sacred landscape, and the Park Service asks visitors not to. Stay on the marked trails around the cones rather than scrambling up them. The views of the Sandias and the city from the trail are more than enough.

Hours and Access

The Volcanoes Day Use Area parking lot is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Walk-in access is allowed from sunrise to sunset if you park outside the gate. There is no entrance fee. The day-use area is on the far West Side, off Atrisco Vista Boulevard.

Heat and Season

There is no shade anywhere on the mesa. Summer afternoons are hot and exposed, so aim for early mornings or evenings from May through September. Autumn, winter and spring are ideal: clear, crisp and with long views. Wind can be strong on the mesa in spring.

Practicalities

Dogs are allowed on leashes of six feet or less. Carry water, a hat and sunscreen. The trail is suitable for families with children who can manage a few miles on uneven ground. Combine it with one of the monument's petroglyph trails, such as Rinconada Canyon, for a fuller day.

Hiking tips for Volcanoes Trail

  • Stay off the cones themselves — climbing them is disrespectful to Pueblo beliefs.
  • Park inside the gate between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., or walk in from outside at sunrise or sunset.
  • Avoid midday in summer; the mesa has no shade at all.
  • Keep dogs on a leash of six feet or less.
  • Pair it with a petroglyph trail like Rinconada Canyon for a full West Mesa day.
