Vulcan Trail (Vulcan Park) Hiking Guide
The Vulcan Trail runs west along the side of Red Mountain from Vulcan Park & Museum, home of the giant iron statue that overlooks Birmingham. It is a wide, mostly flat path of pavement and crushed gravel under tall trees, open to walkers, runners, cyclists and leashed dogs, and it is the easiest hike in this Birmingham set.
Distance and Surface
Freshwater Land Trust, which built the trail with the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham, gives its length as 2.2 miles from Vulcan Park & Museum to Green Springs Highway. Hiking Project maps the route to Red Mountain Terrace Street as 4.1 miles out and back with only about 121 feet of climbing. The eastern end near Vulcan is paved and the western part is crushed gravel. Turn around wherever you like; the way back is the same path.
Parking and Hours
The Vulcan Trail parking lot is at 1867 Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard South, and the land trust says the trail is wheelchair accessible from there. Vulcan Park & Museum lists the lot as open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. From the lot, walk past the statue and down to Kiwanis Centennial Park to reach the trailhead. Neither the land trust nor the museum lists a fee for the trail.
Views and Shade
Hiking Project describes the trail as shaded by tall trees most of the year, with views over downtown from around the Vulcan statue at the east end. Wildflowers come up in the underbrush in spring, and the canopy colors up in fall. The shade makes it a reasonable choice on warm days when the rockier trails at Oak Mountain or Moss Rock feel like too much.
Sharing the Path
Because the trail is multi-use, expect runners, families, people on bikes and plenty of dogs, especially near the Vulcan end. Keep dogs leashed, as the land trust requires, and stay to one side so cyclists can pass. Freshwater Land Trust calls the Vulcan Trail the center of the Red Rock Trail System, a planned network meant to link parks and neighborhoods across Greater Birmingham.
