Waterworks Hill Hiking Guide
Waterworks Hill rises just north of downtown Missoula, and from its grassy ridge the whole city spreads out below — the university, the Clark Fork, and Mount Sentinel and Mount Jumbo framing the valley. A short climb from the trailhead brings you to the hill's big peace sign, a local landmark, and the ridge beyond makes for an easy out-and-back with views all the way.
The Walk
Mapping apps list the out-and-back at about 3.6 miles; sources disagree on the gain, from about 520 to 715 feet. The peace sign is only about 0.3 miles from the Greenough Drive trailhead, making a very short outing possible. Beyond it, the trail follows the ridge north through open grassland in the North Hills, with another trailhead at the north end of Orange Street past I-90.
Wildflowers
The North Hills are known for early spring wildflowers, including phlox, and the City of Missoula has applied seasonal leash requirements on Waterworks Hill to protect them. Stay on the trail to avoid trampling the fragile grassland plants, and check posted signs for current seasonal rules.
Dogs
The North Hills are City of Missoula conservation land. Dogs must be leashed in parking areas and within 200 yards of trailheads, and elsewhere must be under voice control within 75 feet. Waterworks Hill also has seasonal leash requirements; follow the signs at the trailhead.
Seasons
Waterworks Hill is open year-round, and the City of Missoula lists the North Hills as a winter-hiking option. Summer afternoons are hot on the open ridge, so go early or in the evening, when the light over the valley is best.
Practicalities
There is no fee. Parking at the Greenough Drive trailhead is limited; respect the neighbourhood. Bring water and sun protection for the open ridge, and a layer for windy evenings. It is an easy hike for families and a good introduction to Missoula's open-space trails.
