Wekiwa Springs Volksmarch Trail Hiking Guide
Wekiwa Springs State Park sits on the northern edge of metro Orlando, and the Volksmarch loop is how most hikers see the park beyond its famous swimming hole. The orange-blazed route climbs from the spring into longleaf sandhill, swings past Sand Lake and returns through shadier hammock, with the 72-degree spring waiting at the end. Getting through the gate now takes planning: every day visitor needs a reservation.
Permit: Day-use entry to Wekiwa Springs State Park requires an advance reservation, annual passholders included. The entry fee is paid online when you book: $6 per vehicle (up to eight people), $4 for a single-occupant vehicle, $2 for pedestrians, cyclists and extra passengers. Reservations open 60 days ahead.
The Loop
AllTrails maps the Volksmarch Trail as a 5.9-mile loop with about 187 feet of gain, following orange blazes and sharing part of its tread with the Florida Trail. The park's own hiking page lists its Orange trail at 5.3 miles, so expect the posted and app distances to differ by about half a mile depending on where you start and which connectors you take. Much of the footing is soft, sugary sand in the longleaf pine sandhill, which tires the legs more than the flat profile suggests. The park's shortest option, the 0.8-mile Wet to Dry trail, leaves from the spring on a boardwalk and climbs onto the same upland, and the longest, the White trail, runs 13.5 miles.
Reservations and Fees
Since September 2, 2025, Florida State Parks has required a day-use reservation for every visitor to Wekiwa Springs, including annual passholders, after entrance lines began backing into traffic. Book on the state parks reservation site up to 60 days out; the entry fee is charged at booking, there is no separate reservation charge, and a canceled booking is refunded while a no-show is not. Rates are $6 per vehicle for up to eight people, $4 for a car with only the driver, and $2 per pedestrian, cyclist or extra passenger. If you leave midday and want back in, ask the ranger station for a reentry ticket before you drive out. The gate opens at 8 a.m. and the park closes at sunset.
Sun, Storms and Sand
Reviewers on AllTrails single out two things: little shade and plenty of loose sand. From late spring through early fall that combination makes midday hiking punishing, and afternoon thunderstorms build quickly over central Florida, so the realistic window in summer is the first two or three hours after the gate opens. Carry more water than a six-mile walk would normally need, and if thunder starts while you are out on the open sandhill, head for lower, denser woods rather than waiting it out under a lone pine. The cooler months are when this loop is at its best.
Wildlife and Dogs
The park lists Florida black bear, white-tailed deer, bobcat, gopher tortoise and wild turkey among the animals on its trails, and hands out bear-safety information at the ranger station. Some trails are multi-use, so expect the odd cyclist or rider. Dogs are welcome on the trails on a hand-held leash no longer than six feet and may not be left unattended; they are not allowed in the swimming area, and owners must bag and bin waste. The park also burns sections of its uplands on purpose, so you may walk through blackened, fresh-sprouting pine woods.
Finishing at the Spring
The spring holds 72 degrees all year, and the swimming area stays open until 30 minutes before the park closes. Diving and jumping are banned because the basin is shallow, and no lifeguards are on duty. Swimming is not allowed downstream in Wekiwa Springs Run, Rock Springs Run or the Wekiva River. On summer weekends the park has historically hit capacity, which is part of why the reservation system exists, so book early if you want a Saturday.
