Western Ridge and Valley Trail Loop (Rock Creek Park) Hiking Guide

This is the long day in Rock Creek Park: up the Western Ridge Trail to the Maryland line at Boundary Bridge and back down the Valley Trail beside the creek. The Park Service describes its two main trails as the sides of a ladder, with connector paths as the rungs, and this loop walks both sides end to end. It never leaves the District and costs nothing to enter.

Distance and Route

Hiking Project maps the loop at 8.8 miles with 484 feet of climbing. A Fastest Known Time route linking the same two trails comes out at 8.48 miles but lists about 970 feet of gain, so the total depends on your GPS and the exact connectors. The Park Service puts each trail at roughly five miles end to end. Hiking Project's version starts from a parking area in the southern half of the park, heads straight up a steep hill onto the Western Ridge Trail, follows it north to the border, crosses the road and creek at Boundary Bridge, and returns south on the Valley Trail.

Two Very Different Trails

The Western Ridge Trail carries light green blazes and follows the low ridge along the park's west side. Long northern stretches share the wide Black Horse bridle trail and other pieces are paved multi-use path, so it goes quickly. The blue-blazed Valley Trail is the opposite: the Park Service says it is 3 feet wide or less for most of its length, and Hiking Project warns of rocks, roots and narrow passages as it rises and drops along Rock Creek. Save some energy for the second half.

Finding Your Way

Don't count on signposts. The park tells hikers to carry a map because there are few trail signs, and Hiking Project notes that many unmarked paths lead out to neighborhood streets. Follow the blazes and keep the park map or the PATC map (both linked from the park's hiking page) on your phone. The Valley Trail also crosses several roads, and the park asks for care at each one.

Restrooms, Hours and Parking

Restrooms along the Valley Trail are at Picnic Grove #10 (seasonal), Picnic Grove #6 and Picnic Grove #1; on the Western Ridge side the park points to Peirce Barn and Picnic Grove #1. The park has shut the Nature Center building for remediation with no reopening date, so leave it out of your plans. Park land is open sunrise to sunset and closed after dark, which matters on a loop this long once autumn days shorten.

Dogs and the Creek

Leashed dogs are welcome on every outdoor trail in Rock Creek Park. Federal rules cap leash length at six feet, and DC law separately bans off-leash dogs outside designated dog parks. Carry waste bags to a trash can. The park prohibits swimming and wading in Rock Creek, so enjoy the water from the bank.

Hiking tips for Western Ridge and Valley Trail Loop (Rock Creek Park)

  • Start early in the short-day months; the park closes at dark and this loop takes most of a day.
  • Download the park map before you go, since junction signs are scarce.
  • Expect slower going on the blue-blazed Valley Trail than on the Western Ridge.
  • Carry water; restroom stops are spread out and one of them is seasonal.
  • Look both ways at every road crossing on the Valley Trail.
