Whiteoak Canyon Hiking Guide

Whiteoak Canyon has been a Shenandoah favourite since the early days of the Skyland resort, according to the Park Service. The canyon holds a series of waterfalls stepping down the mountainside, and the hike from Skyline Drive reaches the upper falls from a ledge overlook. Like much of Shenandoah, it is downhill on the way in and uphill all the way out.

Upper Falls from Skyline Drive

The Park Service lists the hike to the Upper Whiteoak Falls overlook at 4.6 miles round trip with about 1,040 feet of gain, rated moderate and taking about three and a half hours. From the Whiteoak Canyon parking area at milepost 42.6, the trail descends through forest to a rocky ledge overlooking the upper falls, about 2.3 miles in. The return is a steady climb back to Skyline Drive.

From the Bottom

The lower falls can be reached from the park boundary off Route 600, near the Old Rag area, which makes it an uphill-first hike. Distances for that approach vary by source, from about 2 to 2.9 miles round trip with 400 to 500 feet of gain. Strong hikers link Whiteoak and Cedar Run into a demanding loop of about 8 miles with close to 2,800 feet of gain.

Upside-Down Hiking

Starting from Skyline Drive means you descend first and climb out at the end, when you are tired. Plan your turnaround time, keep water in reserve and don't let the easy descent fool you. The rocks near the falls and stream crossings are slippery; stay on the trail and avoid climbing on wet ledges.

Seasons

Spring is the best time for waterfalls, when flow is highest. Summer is shaded and cooler than the valley, and autumn colour in the canyon is spectacular — and busy. Cedar Run, the neighbouring canyon, was affected by a washout in 2024 that has since been addressed. Check park alerts for the current status of trails before you go.

Practicalities

Leashed dogs are allowed on a leash of six feet or less. A seven-day vehicle entry to Shenandoah is $30 and an annual park pass $55, card only at the gate. Skyland, just to the north, has food and restrooms. Black bears are common — keep food secured and give them room.

Hiking tips for Whiteoak Canyon

  • Budget time and water for the climb back to Skyline Drive — it is all uphill on the return.
  • Come in spring for the strongest flow over the upper falls.
  • Stay off wet ledges near the falls; they are slippery.
  • Start from the Route 600 boundary lot for an uphill-first approach to the lower falls.
  • Keep dogs on a leash of six feet or less.
