Wolverine Peak Hiking Guide

Wolverine Peak is one of the big summits on the skyline above Anchorage, and climbing it is a proper Chugach day. From Prospect Heights on Anchorage's Hillside, the trail climbs through forest and brush into open tundra and up a long ridge to the top, gaining about 3,500 feet. On a clear day, the summit views stretch across Cook Inlet to the Alaska Range and down into the Williwaw Lakes basin.

The Climb

Alaska State Parks lists the route via the Wolverine Bowl Trail at 4.7 miles one way with about 3,500 feet of gain, for a 9.4-mile round trip; mapping apps put the gain closer to 3,700 feet. The lower trail is forest and brush; above treeline it becomes a long, steady grind up tundra to the summit. Budget most of a day.

Views

The summit looks over the Alaska Range, Cook Inlet and the Williwaw Lakes below. In late summer and fall, the tundra turns red and gold and berries ripen along the upper trail. Clear days are worth waiting for; in cloud, the summit can be featureless and cold.

Moose and Bears

Alaska State Parks notes that moose frequent the Hillside trails, and Chugach State Park is home to hundreds of black bears as well as brown bears. The brushy lower sections are where surprise encounters happen. Make noise, carry bear spray and give moose — especially cows with calves — a wide berth.

Weather and Seasons

Summer and early fall are the main seasons. Snow lingers on the upper mountain into June, and winter and spring bring avalanche danger on the slopes. Weather changes fast: carry rain gear, warm layers and extra food. Long summer daylight helps, but start early anyway.

Practicalities

Parking at Prospect Heights costs $5 per day or the $60 Alaska State Parks annual pass. In Chugach State Park, pets must be leashed in parking lots and under control on trails. Carry enough water for the whole day; don't count on finding reliable sources high up.
